Where is a good, yet cheap region of France to spend a week?

my boyfriend and I would like to go to France at the end of August/beginning of September. However, as we are students, we are on a budget. We were originally thinking of Paris...but looked at prices of food and drink and are changing

it has everything really, beach, history, culture, absolutely loads of things to do!! and it's not far from paris either so you could hop on a train and still go to paris for a day trip or something!!
